The morning started cool, breezy and slightly overcast at zMax Dragway, and I was loving the change of climate. Today's mission was two-pronged: try the Cantrell Motorsports lap timer app and make clean, fast runs. CCR put together another fun, fast, and challenging course and over 160 entrants registered for the event. I didn't make any changes to the WRX for this round, because I have exceeded my season budget and am in the midst of reconnaissance for the best…

It’s Always the Little Things

Race Reports, Repairs and Upgrades
This post was supposed to be a race report for round 9 of the 2016 CCR SCCA autocross season, but instead it's the story about the importance of the little things. I arrived at zMax Dragway on September 24th with a suction cup mount for my GoPro and a lapel microphone in addition to my regular gear. I was excited! I was going to attempt to record my first video recap of the race, but that came to a ticking, squeaking halt in the McDonald's drive through in Concord, NC. (more…)

Race Date: 8/20/2016 Class: Rookie - A Street Prepared Results: – Class: 6th/7 - Overall: 95/151 – My FTD: 72.318 (PAX:62.555) – Class FTD: 70.772 (PAX: 59.165) 2015 Scion FRS - Class Win: 71.505 (PAX: 57.061) 2015 Ford Fiesta ST – The FTD: 61.575 - 1987 Nissan 300ZX Today's autocross was held on another classic Carolina summer day. The morning was muggy and the afternoon was broiling, but fortunately it wasn't as hot as the USCA race at the end of July. Some cloud cover kept the morning and early afternoon at a bearable temperature. The afternoon was a scorcher, but luckily I was driving with the last run group so the heat was easy to ignore. This event was also my first entry in the CCR Rookie class, which…

Race Date: 7/30/2016 Category: Grand Touring Light Class: Novice Results: - Autocross: 50.787 (6th of 10) - Speed Stop: 18.732 (7th of 10) The Ultimate Street Car Association is a relatively new, grassroots motorsports organization focused on providing a unique and fun racing experience for people with track-ready street cars. Their Optima Search for the Ultimate Street Car is a comprehensive competition that focuses on both the track readiness and street readiness of the entrants' vehicles. Over the course of two days drivers participate in an autocross competition, "speed stop" competition, hot lap challenge on a road course, a road rally on real highways, and a design and engineering competition that is as much about the performance upgrades to the car as it is about the creature comforts and road…

(2014 BMW 335i) – The FTD: 53.961 (2009 Top Kart Speedy TM K9b) Round 3 of the 2016 CCR AutoX season was another cool, overcast day at zMax Dragway with a large and varied field that included fifteen novice drivers. I was placed in the 4th run group. By the end of the day I logged five runs of decreasing lap time, clipped two cones, and learned a little extra about pre-race preparation. Out of the fifteen in my class, I came away with the 4th fastest run of the day in a field that included two S2000's, a 2016 Porsche Cayman S, and myriad Bimmers. (more…)

Race Date: 4/2/2016 Class: Novice Results: – Class: 1st/13 – My FTD: 66.614 sec. – Class FTD: 66.614 sec. – The FTD: 51.982 (2009 Top Kart Speedy TM K9b) The Central Carolinas SCCA chapter returned to zMax Dragway for round 2 of their 2016 autocross season, and the day started off cool and wet. The field was large again with 182 total entries and nearly two dozen novice drivers. I began the day in the 2nd run group, and the track dried just in time for me to turn my first lap. The goal for today, in addition to getting my autocross legs underneath me, was to evaluate the Harry's Lap Timer App for the iPhone and it's efficacy at reviewing each run in preparation for the next. A full write-up on…

Race Reports
Race Date: 2/27/2016 Class: Novice Results: – Class: 4th / 33 – Overall: 109th / 209 - My FTD: 68.392 sec. - Class FTD: 65.67 sec. (1991 BMW 318) - The FTD: 53.820 (2009 Top Kart Speedy TM K9b) Although I intended on beginning my SCCA campaign in the STX class, I decided to start off as a Novice. Over 200 cars attended the event this past Saturday, and I did not want to interrupt a possibly large, competitive class with my rookie issues. The bonus of being a novice: an extra run during my session. I'll take it. That run would pay off as it was my fastest time of the day at 68.392 seconds, which earned me 2nd in my novice group and 4th out of all 33 novices. I…

Race Date: 2/20/2016 Class: Stock >200 WHP Finish: - Class: 7th / 16 - Overall: 23rd / 65 My FTD: 45.852 sec. The FTD: 42.942 I started the season at Clemson University with the Clemson Sports Car Club for their second autocross of the year. With fresh BFGoodrich Tires and no prior full-size autocross experience, a low-key autocross at my alma mater seemed like the perfect place to start. The day promised to be lukewarm and nice enough to make the two and a half hour trek. I arrived at the track, a small and technical course set up in Clemson's C1 parking lot, and prepped my car for driving in the 1st run group. Each driver was allotted four runs in their session with a 5-10 minute gap in…
