Powertrain Rejuvenation: The Rules are the Limit (STX)

Powertrain Rejuvenation: The Rules are the Limit (STX)

If I'm going to pull the engine for a refresh, there's no reason I couldn't replace my flywheel with the stock version and bump down to a more appropriate class for my budget. As such, I wanted to investigate how far I could go with my engine in Street Touring X. Here's what I compiled from the 1/30/2017 release of the SCCA Solo STX Rules, which can be found here. Oil Pan/Lubrication Any oil pan is acceptable Any oil pickup is acceptable NO addition of, or modification to, windage trays or crank scrapers Thermal Control Radiator can be replaced, BUT must be same as stock (or greater in magnitude) in the following areas: Dry weight Coolant capacity Core dimensions Mounting locations Any water expansion tank is allowed Silicone replacement coolant…

2017 CCR-SCCA Preliminary Schedule

2017 CCR-SCCA Preliminary Schedule

Uncategorized
The 2017 Central Carolinas Region SCCA schedule is all but finalized. The preliminary schedule shown below is said to be solid barring any mishaps or unforeseen conflicts with booking the venues. New for 2017 is the addition of the Donaldson airfield in Greenville, SC. The facility is a former air force base that's now a component of the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center. I had the opportunity to drive there several times with the Clemson Formula SAE team. The repave of the facility in 2014 revived the track surface, and now it's a great place for an autocross. zMax Dragway is returning in 2017 for approximately 3/4 of the season, and the Black Lake at the Michelin Proving Grounds will not return. Although racing at zMax is incredibly convenient,…

Race Date: 7/30/2016 Category: Grand Touring Light Class: Novice Results: - Autocross: 50.787 (6th of 10) - Speed Stop: 18.732 (7th of 10) The Ultimate Street Car Association is a relatively new, grassroots motorsports organization focused on providing a unique and fun racing experience for people with track-ready street cars. Their Optima Search for the Ultimate Street Car is a comprehensive competition that focuses on both the track readiness and street readiness of the entrants' vehicles. Over the course of two days drivers participate in an autocross competition, "speed stop" competition, hot lap challenge on a road course, a road rally on real highways, and a design and engineering competition that is as much about the performance upgrades to the car as it is about the creature comforts and road…

Bugeye Brakes: Assessing the Situation

Repairs and Upgrades, Uncategorized
At my last autocross, I noticed that my braking seemed to be more black and white than shades of grey. Braking for a corner is difficult to judge and the soft pedal means I have to travel farther to stop as hard I want. I'll admit that I haven't paid much attention to my brakes in the last five years other than replacing the rear calipers with re-mans. Excessive brake dust and pad wear on the right rear prompted the swap, but I ignored the service manual and only bled the new rear calipers. Now I'm paying the price. Approaching a tight turn, I have to stab into the brakes in order to get any response. The rapid actuation removes any ability I have to modulate the input into a smooth…

Race Date: 4/30/2016 Class: Novice Results: – Class: 4th/15 – My FTD: 70.673 sec. – Class FTD: 69.065 sec. (2014 BMW 335i) – The FTD: 53.961 (2009 Top Kart Speedy TM K9b) Round 3 of the 2016 CCR AutoX season was another cool, overcast day at zMax Dragway with a large and varied field that included fifteen novice drivers. I was placed in the 4th run group. By the end of the day I logged five runs of decreasing lap time, clipped two cones, and learned a little extra about pre-race preparation. Out of the fifteen in my class, I came away with the 4th fastest run of the day in a field that included two S2000's, a 2016 Porsche Cayman S, and myriad Bimmers. (more…)

Race Date: 2/27/2016 Class: Novice Results: – Class: 4th / 33 – Overall: 109th / 209 - My FTD: 68.392 sec. - Class FTD: 65.67 sec. (1991 BMW 318) - The FTD: 53.820 (2009 Top Kart Speedy TM K9b) Although I intended on beginning my SCCA campaign in the STX class, I decided to start off as a Novice. Over 200 cars attended the event this past Saturday, and I did not want to interrupt a possibly large, competitive class with my rookie issues. The bonus of being a novice: an extra run during my session. I'll take it. That run would pay off as it was my fastest time of the day at 68.392 seconds, which earned me 2nd in my novice group and 4th out of all 33 novices. I…

Race Date: 2/20/2016 Class: Stock >200 WHP Finish: - Class: 7th / 16 - Overall: 23rd / 65 My FTD: 45.852 sec. The FTD: 42.942 I started the season at Clemson University with the Clemson Sports Car Club for their second autocross of the year. With fresh BFGoodrich Tires and no prior full-size autocross experience, a low-key autocross at my alma mater seemed like the perfect place to start. The day promised to be lukewarm and nice enough to make the two and a half hour trek. I arrived at the track, a small and technical course set up in Clemson's C1 parking lot, and prepped my car for driving in the 1st run group. Each driver was allotted four runs in their session with a 5-10 minute gap in…
